In addition to Career Day, we had our Hour of Code! "The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science (code.org)." This is a national movement and has moved beyond just an hour and is occuring year round in some schools and homes. "Computer science drives innovation throughout the US economy, but it remains marginalized throughout K-12 education. There are currently 517,393 open computing jobs nationwide. Last year, only 42,969 computer science students graduated into the workforce (code.org)."Hopefully through our efforts we will have students that pursue careers in the field of Computer Science.
Thank you for allowing your students time to participate in coding activities during your class time and thank you for dressing in character to get our students excited about learning to code. You lead by example! For your efforts, each student received a certificate of completion, popcorn, water, and a candy snack bag as incentive for completing their coding task. Mr. Keels & Mrs. Higgins assisted with the donations of these items. Mr. Brown and our students assisted with packaging them up and getting them to teacher's classroom. When you see our Coding Ambassadors, congratulate them! Coding Ambassadors were chosen by their teachers because they also led by example, were fully engaged, and went above & beyond in participating in their coding activities. Those students were notified at the end of the day and got to pick an item from the grab bag. Items in the grab bag included: earbuds, selfie sticks, and movie theater candy. I appreciate EVERYONES efforts in exposing our students to these valuable computer science skills. In my excitement, I did not get pictures of our students coding:/ So if you documented your coding activities through pictures share them with me. Review all the steps on how to apply Deadline is December 16th to submit an entry for students and staff to participate. Students need to also complete a parent permission form. Read below for the complete timeline.
We encourage, students and staff, to participate in this event! This is your chance to show off all your creativity through video creation! It is important for students to find a school contact. This could be a homeroom teacher or any other (R2) adult who can assist them through this process. Students must have a Richland 2 school contact to proceed. More information about the school contact can be found here. There will be a red carpet screening night on March 23rd, 2017 for all entries that make it to the finals. Additionally, winning videos will be announced at the end of this screening event. Important Links...
